Swimming Pool Project Space has emptied the walls to premiere a hearing of Sergio Messina’s Boleros (2009) on Friday, May 15th. Italian born Messina’s skills do not fall into a perfectly defined genre, however, his interests define him as a cultural terrorist through out Europe. In his latest work, inspired by his 6 month stay in Chicago, he has re-mastered 4 performances of Maurice Ravel's Bolero by combining four city’s symphonic versions with orchestral tonal uniformity in a 30 minute piece. With his keen electronic music background he is able to maintain subtle sonic dynamics above its steady snare drum rhythm. Already with a reputation as an nontraditional musical composition with a repetitive structure fit for dance, he adjusts the framework by synchronizing the tracks and playing them three times in a row. The original Bolero already has a building crescendo within a melody trying to break free, yet minimal music fans and Beloro enthusiasts will be enticed by the contemporary, thoughtful electronic re-organization. Boleros will play at 7:45pm and at 9pm.
